Tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a body contouring procedure popular among adults that desire a flat stomach and a youthful contour in the midsection. Often incorporated into a “mommy makeover” or recommended to adults that have lost a significant amount of weight, tummy tuck is designed to eliminate excess pockets of fat, tighten loose abdominal skin and tissue, and repair separated abdominal muscles. As a highly experienced abdominoplasty surgeon, Dr. Betty Kim is known for beautiful results that look completely natural. Patients appreciate her personalized approach, as she tailors every procedure to the patient’s unique anatomy and goals.
Why Do Patients Elect to Have Tummy Tuck with Dr. Kim?
There are many reasons why patients may opt to have tummy tuck with Dr. Kim:
- To remedy the effects of pregnancy, weight fluctuation and the aging process on the abdomen
- To address abdominal fat that is resistant to diet and exercise
- To fix loose abdominal skin that can sag from the lower abdomen
- To repair abdominal muscles that have stretched during pregnancy
- To be able to fit into clothing
- To feel confident and attractive
In every case, Dr. Betty Kim first performs a physical examination, evaluating the patient’s muscle tone and noting the laxity of the abdominal muscles. She also determines the amount and location of excess fat, as well as the quality of the skin and amount of excess skin. Based on this information, Dr. Kim can craft a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s individual needs and goals.
Tummy tuck is normally performed on an outpatient basis with anesthesia in a hospital or surgery center setting. Tummy tuck can be combined with breast surgery and liposuction for a complete mommy makeover.
To begin the tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Kim creates a horizontal incision low on the abdomen, right above the pubic hairline. The incision is low enough that any scarring is concealed beneath a bathing suit or underwear.
Through the incision, she excises excess fat and skin. She tightens separated or loose abdominal muscles, stitching them together in a corset-like fashion, which narrows the waistline. Liposuction can be incorporated into the procedure for additional sculpting of the sides and the back. Dr. Kim may relocate the belly button higher on the abdomen through a second incision. Finally, Dr. Kim re-drapes the abdominal skin more tightly over the abdomen for a smoother contour.
After being monitored for a short time, patients are released to recover at home. You can also elect to stay at a healing recovery center with overnight nursing care.
Most patients resume work within two to three weeks, slowly easing back into exercise, socializing and their regular routine. Everyone recovers at their own pace, and some opt to spend more time at home before resuming work. Dr. Kim provides comprehensive aftercare instructions to accelerate the healing process and prevent any complications.
